As Superintendent Miller-Nelson shared, we’re moving into the next phase of community input for the facility planning process! Building on the feedback gathered so far, we’ve launched a new survey that takes a closer look at potential paths forward and asks participants to weigh in on more specific topics, including funding options, millage considerations, and ways to address the District’s identified facilities needs.

Community input plays an important role in helping ensure that the solution we choose best serves student learning and best uses the community’s resources. The feedback collected will help guide the Blueprint for Tomorrow Steering Team and Board of Education as they determine our next steps.

Complete the survey through Sunday, June 7th at midnight.

Shine Squad

MPS is thrilled to introduce the SHINE Squad, our new district-wide volunteer initiative designedto bring a little extra light into our hallways.

What is the SHINE Squad?

The name says it all. Our volunteers are here to Support, Help, Inspire, Nurture, and Engage. Whether it’s providing an extra set of hands for a classroom project, helping with lunchroom supervision, or offering one-on-one mentorship, the SHINE Squad is about building ownership and pride in our schools.

Who can join?

If you have a heart for our students, there’s a place for you. We’re looking for:

  • Parents, guardians, and grandparents.

  • Aspiring educators looking for experience or former educators who want to get engaged.

  • Community groups and local residents who care about our students and staff.

The Perks (Besides the warm fuzzies)

Every SHINE Squad member receives a limited-edition SHINE Squad t-shirt (because every great team needs a uniform). Before your first assignment, you’ll go through a quick 30-minute training to ensure you’re ready to hit the ground running.

Ready to make a difference?

Northeast could use help with:

  • Morning Supervision 7:15AM - 8:05 AM
  • Lunch Supervision 11:07AM - 12:52 PM

The future is bright in Midland, but it’s even brighter when we work together. To view current opportunities and start your application, visit www.midlandps.org/volunteer.

Attention Parents/Guardians of 7th Grade and/or New Students:

  • Michigan law requires that all students be immunized against vaccine preventable diseases to attend Northeast Middle School. When a student enters 7th grade, the immunization requirements change. Please be sure your student is up-to-date. The deadline for immunizations was November 1, 2025, but appointments with the Health Department become increasingly difficult to secure as the deadline approaches. The typical immunization update requirements for 7th graders include a booster to Tdap and the meningitis vaccine.
  • NOTE: Any parent/guardian who wants to claim a non medical waiver will need to receive education regarding the benefits of vaccination and the risks of disease from a county health department before obtaining the certified nonmedical waiver form through the Local Health Department. The new rule requires the use of the State of Michigan non medical waiver form dated January 1, 2017.

CANVAS

Parents/Guardians - Did you know you can create an observer account in Canvas? Having this access allows you to see what's going on in your students classes.

Step 1: Have your Northeast student follow these directions to generate a pairing code.

Step 2: Each Parent/Guardian wanting observer access must register. Select "Need a Canvas Account" in the upper right corner, then select the "Parents sign up here" link Finally fill in your information and the pairing code your student generated for you and "Start Participating" to register.

MICHIGAN SECURE STORAGE LAW

In an effort to educate parents and families about the importance of safe firearm storage, Michigan Schools are required to share informational resources. The new secure storage law requires firearm owners to securely store firearms wherever minors are present or likely to be present. The information below explains the requirements of the secure storage law in Michigan. Specific resources required to be sent home to parents and caregivers include:

GO GUARDIAN

Parents will be notified of all Go-Guardian alerts outside of school hours. This will alert parents of any concerning technology behavior for their student.

OFFICE DROP OFFS

As always, please encourage your students to have everything they need before leaving for school each day. If they do forget something feel free to drop it off in the office. If your student contacts you and asks you to bring an item, please let them know you will bring it and that they should check the office between classes or before lunch.

FINES FOR CHROMEBOOK LABELS

If either the asset tag from the back or the large student information tag from the front is removed or defaced a $5 fine will be issued for each label. If either label is peeling or fading, report this to the office or library so a replacement can be ordered.

THE ROCK AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The ROCK is a productive after-school program that instills confidence and a sense of belonging. They also provide mentorship, tutors, games, activities, food, and a safe place for teens. This is a drop-in program that runs from 2:50-6:00 PM; meaning your student can leave when it makes sense for your family. All participants must be pre-registered.
